What a template service is good for — and what it is not
Guided document builders are genuinely useful for routine, low-stakes paperwork: a residential lease, a bill of sale, a non-disclosure agreement, a simple will, a demand letter. They are not a substitute for a lawyer when real money, property or a dispute is involved. The sensible rule is that if getting it wrong would cost more than a few hours of legal advice, get the advice.
The documents people actually come for
- Property — residential and commercial leases, eviction and termination notices, rent receipts.
- Business — service agreements, partnership agreements, invoices, NDAs, independent contractor contracts.
- Personal — last will and testament, power of attorney, living will, loan agreements.
- Employment — offer letters, resignation letters, employment contracts.
Jurisdiction is the thing to check
Landlord-tenant, will execution and notice periods are set at state level in the US and vary a lot. Choose your state at the start of the questionnaire rather than editing a generic document afterwards — the builder swaps in different clauses, not just a different address line. For a will, also check your state’s witnessing and signing requirements; a correctly drafted will that is signed wrongly is not valid.
Pricing and subscriptions
The usual model is that building the document is free and you pay to download, print or e-sign it, often through a subscription that renews. Two things worth doing before you buy: read what happens at the end of the trial or first term, and download and save a copy of every document you create while the subscription is live.
Applying a discount
Codes are entered at the payment step and typically apply to the subscription or single-document price. Annual plans are normally cheaper per month than the monthly one if you genuinely need more than a couple of documents.
