Measure the footprint before anything else
Pergolas and gazebos are sold by frame size, and the frame is bigger than the roof it covers. Measure the slab, deck or lawn area you actually have, then subtract clearance on every side for the posts and any anchoring plates. A 10×13 pergola does not fit a 10×13 patio.
What separates a good outdoor structure from a cheap one
- Frame material. Powder-coated aluminium will not rot or need annual treatment; steel is stronger but wants checking for rust at the welds; timber looks best and costs the most in upkeep.
- Wind rating and anchoring. This is the specification people skip and then regret. An unanchored gazebo is a sail. Check what the frame is rated for and whether the anchor kit is included.
- Canopy fabric. Look for a stated UV rating and water resistance, and check whether replacement canopies are sold separately — the fabric fails long before the frame.
Furniture and patio sets
Rattan-effect sets are almost all PE wicker over an aluminium or steel frame. The differences that matter are frame metal, cushion foam density and whether the covers unzip for washing. Cushions left outside in a wet climate will not last a season regardless of price.
