Sizing is the part people get wrong
Baby clothing runs by age on the label and by height in reality. Buy to the baby’s current length rather than the month printed on the tag, and if they are between sizes go up — a sleep sack that is too big is a safety issue at the neck, but a footed sleeper that is slightly long is only cosmetic for a few weeks.
Choosing a sleep sack
- TOG rating is the number to match to the room, not the season. Roughly: 0.5 TOG for a warm room, 1.0 for a normal one, 2.5 for a cold one. Over-bundling is more common than under-bundling.
- Neck and armhole fit — snug enough that the baby cannot slip down inside it.
- Two-way zips — the difference between a calm night change and a fully undressed baby at 3am.
About the fabric
Bamboo-blend knits are softer and more temperature-regulating than cotton jersey of the same weight, and they are also more prone to pilling if they go through a hot wash. Cold wash, low tumble, no fabric softener — softener coats the fibre and is what kills the feel people bought the fabric for.
