When shipping your bags actually makes sense

Door-to-door baggage shipping is not always cheaper than checking a bag, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. It wins in specific situations:

• Golf clubs and skis. Airline oversize fees, plus the risk of the bag missing a connection, make this the clearest case.
• Cruises. Bags meet the ship rather than travelling with you, which removes the worst failure mode in travel — luggage that misses embarkation and cannot catch up.
• Long trips and family travel. Two or three checked bags each way, plus the airport handling, changes the maths quickly.
