Picking the right dash cam

Rexing’s range is built around channel count, and that is the decision that changes the price most:

• Single channel — records the road ahead only. Fine if you just want evidence of what happened in front of you.
• Dual channel — front and rear, or front and cabin. The cabin option is the one rideshare drivers need; the rear option is what protects you from being rear-ended.
• Four channel and mirror models — full coverage including both sides. Worth it on a van or a work vehicle, overkill on a commuter car.

The two things that actually decide picture quality

Resolution is the number on the box, but at night the sensor and aperture matter more. A 4K camera with a weak sensor reads a number plate worse at 2am than a good 1080p one. If the camera is there for evidence rather than scenery, look at the low-light spec first.

The second thing is the memory card. Dash cams write continuously and wear a card out; use a high-endurance card rated for constant recording, and reformat it in the camera every month or two.

Hardwiring and parking mode

Parking mode only works if the camera keeps power with the engine off. That needs either a hardwire kit tapped into the fuse box or an OBD kit, and the kit has to have a low-voltage cutoff so it stops before it flattens the battery. Buying the camera without the kit and then discovering it cannot watch the car while parked is the most common regret here.
