Perpetual licence or subscription — decide this first
ACDSee is one of the few remaining editors that still sells a permanent licence, and that is the main reason people choose it over the subscription-only alternatives. The trade-off is straightforward:
- Perpetual licence — you pay once and the version you bought keeps working forever. You do not get the next year’s feature release unless you pay to upgrade.
- Subscription — lower entry cost, every update included, and the software stops working when you stop paying.
If you edit a few times a month and are happy on one version for two or three years, the perpetual licence usually costs less overall. If you want the newest AI selection and masking tools as they land, the subscription is the cheaper route.
Which edition you actually need
- Photo Studio Home — cataloguing, batch renaming, basic edits. Enough if your job is mostly organising thousands of photos and doing light corrections.
- Photo Studio Professional — adds the full RAW develop mode and non-destructive editing. This is the version most enthusiast photographers want.
- Photo Studio Ultimate — adds layers, masking and a full pixel editor, so you can finish a composite without moving to another program.
- Gemstone Photo Editor — the layer-based editor sold on its own, for people who want the retouching side without the catalogue.
Applying a discount code

Before you buy
Every paid edition has a free trial. Install it and open your own RAW files in it first — camera support is the single most common disappointment, especially with a recently released body. If your camera is not supported in the trial, buying a licence will not change that until ACDSee ships a camera-support update.
