Stop writing to the drive first
This is the part no discount code helps with, and it decides whether recovery works at all. When a file is deleted, the data usually stays on disk until something overwrites it. Every minute the drive stays in use — including installing recovery software onto that same drive — raises the chance the file you want is gone for good. Power the machine down, and install the recovery tool to a different drive.
Which licence is worth buying
- Monthly — the right choice for a one-off accident. You have lost a folder, you want it back, you are not planning to do this again.
- Yearly — makes sense if you manage several machines, or work with camera cards and external drives regularly enough that this will happen again.
- Lifetime — a single payment against future incidents. Worth comparing against two years of the annual price before you decide; the break-even is usually closer than it looks.
All three tiers carry their own discount code, so check the code for the tier you actually want rather than assuming one code covers the range.
What recovery software can and cannot do
- Deleted files on a healthy drive — the best case, and where these tools work well.
- Formatted or corrupted partitions — often recoverable, though file names and folder structure may not survive.
- Physically failing drives — software cannot fix a mechanical fault. If the drive clicks, is not detected, or disappears mid-scan, stop and talk to a data recovery lab. Repeated scanning of a failing drive makes a lab’s job harder.
- SSDs with TRIM enabled — deleted data is often wiped by the drive itself within minutes. Recovery odds here are much lower than on a mechanical disk, whatever the software claims.
Before you pay
Run the free scan first. Every tool in this category lets you see what it can find before you buy a licence — if your files are not in the preview, the licence will not conjure them up.
